Up next month: a five minute lesson on how to update your Meta keywords to help search engines find your listing to drive more traffic to your Web page.
|
|
The meta data on your listing page is used by search engines (such as Google) to figure out what your page is all about. If you are a place of worship, then words like church or temple, congregation, Sunday school, and Mass or Service schedule are all ideas of some key words that people may use to do a search if they were looking to find an organization like yours.
Your meta description is a couple of sentences, no more than 160 characters in length, that allows search engines to understand what your listing is all about. It displays when your listing shows up in a search result. You should keep it simple, and don't repeat the title of your page. For more information see the screen shot below for what shows up in a Seek And Find Google search using the words: Seek And Find Church. One search result is a listing of some of our church customers and two results are pages explaining Seek And Find. You can see the meta descriptions for each page under the underlined page title.

Let's get started writing yours!
- Log on to Seek And Find by entering your user name and password in the upper right hand corner of the page. (If you need a reminder of your user name and password, click here and we will get that information to you.)
- Click on edit my profile/listings beneath your name to access your edit my details page.
- Click on edit to the right of your listing, which will bring you to the Edit Entry page.
- Click on the Meta Data tab.
- Enter meta keywords and a meta description, using the tips from above.
- Make sure and hit the red save button at the bottom of the page.

Add events and coupons to your Seek And Find listing to inform customers of upcoming events and sales. Rather than just posting a document to your listing, by adding an event or coupon, you have the flexibility to put up an image and add a description, as well as to set a start and end date and time, or even a recurrence.
Adding an event or coupon is easy!
- Log on to Seek And Find by entering your user name and password in the upper right hand corner of the page. (If you need a reminder of your user name or password, click on forgot username/password? above the login button.)
- Click on edit my profile/listings beneath your name to access your edit my details page.
- Click on the My Events & Coupons tab and then click on the Add New link.
- Give your event or coupon a title, and then choose a category from the drop down list (Special Event, Sale, Promotion, or Coupon).
- Enter a start and end date for your event (you can enter a date in yyyy-mm-dd format, or simply click the calendar icon to the right to select a date).
- Entering a start time or end time is optional, but if you do enter a time, be sure to enter it in 24-hour hh:mm format (i.e., 13:30 for 1:30 PM).
- Next you can set a repetition for your event or sale if it’s a recurring one. The default is set to “nothing” but if you select one of the repetition options (daily, weekly, monthly, or weekday), a couple of options pop up to let you choose the frequency of the recurrence, and how long you want the recurrence to continue. For example, if you have a sale the last Tuesday of each month, select “weekday,” then choose “last” and “Tuesday” from the drop-down menus.
- If you’d like to add an image (a printable flyer or coupon, for example) click on the Browse button to the right of the Image field and locate the image on your computer (Note: the image must be a .jpg, .png, or .gif file).
- The following step is to add a Description of your event or coupon. Add any information you want to share (e.g., restrictions and limitations, or instructions on usage), and then click on the red Save button at the top of the page. Your promotion is now ready! After you hit Save, you’ll return to the Event screen where you can Edit, View, or Delete your event or coupon, or add another.
When someone visits your listing, a box of Upcoming Events will display on the top right of your page. If you have multiple events listed, a “View All” option will allow the visitor to see a full display of the events. Clicking on an individual event brings up a window with the option to print.

Church/community edition
(Editor’s note: The Seek And Find FIVE is predicated on the idea that with just five minutes of work out of your busy schedule, you can make your Seek And Find listing work for you around the clock. This month’s edition stretches that definition a bit: we’ll say that, for whoever your parish or organization's webmaster or tech guru is, this is a five-minute tutorial; for everyone else, we’ll include the standard disclaimer—don’t try this at home, folks!)
A widget is a gadget used to convey information from another source without leaving the host Web site. Widgets are small pieces of Web code that can be embedded into a Web site and are used to display information on Web pages. They can be applied to any Web page and are commonly used on sites like Facebook, MySpace, and blogs.
Currently, there are two types of Seek And Find widgets:
- Bulletin widget—Allows you to display current and past issues of your publication directly on your parish or community’s Web site (in addition to your Seek And Find listing). No need to upload your publications anymore. They are automatically displayed as they become available.
- Sponsor widget—Displays a categorized or alphabetical listing of the sponsors of your publications on your Web site.
Information on the Seek And Find widgets is updated nightly. For the bulletin widget, this means your latest publication is usually available on the widget on your Web site within one business day of you submitting your publication to Liturgical Publications for printing.
Both widgets are available free to all current LPi publishing customers. The code is available on the Edit Your Details page after your first publication has been uploaded to Seek And Find. Simply click on the widget and a screen with the code will pop up; from there it’s a matter of copying and pasting.
The default setting for the number of publications to display on the bulletin widget is twelve, although you can customize this within the widget code to show a smaller number if you wish. This widget code is placed in the [body] section of your Web site. We recommend that if you do not have Web coding experience, that you contact someone within your organization who does. Besides the number of publications that display in the widget, several other features can be customized as well:
1. rss_widget_max_links=[number of publications to display] 2. rss_widget_width=[width of the widget in pixels] 3. rss_widget_height=[height of the widget in pixels] 4. rss_widget_border=[border color in hex format, '#CCCCCC'] 5. rss_widget_font=[font to be used for the header and link text] 6. rss_widget_show_thumbs=[include thumbnail view of the publication, ‘yes’ or ‘no’] 7. rss_widget_header=[text title of the widget you wish to display]
Here’s an example of how the bulletin widget will appear on your site:

And here’s an example of the sponsor widget:

So do your members, your sponsors, and yourself a favor, and forward this e-newsletter on to your webmaster; the bulletin widget saves you the trouble of uploading the bulletin each week, and the sponsor widget is a great way to say thank you to the advertisers who support your publication!

Black Friday is approaching, and the more recent phenomenon of Cyber Monday follows close on its heels. For many businesses, the next couple of months will be the busiest of the year. So while you may be find yourself short on time these days, now is precisely when it’s worth taking five minutes to promote your business.
A recent consumer survey* showed that 92% of those surveyed read reviews when considering whether to purchase a product! And, wouldn’t you know it, your Seek And Find listing has a ratings and reviews feature already built in! To take advantage of this feature, make sure it is activated on your listing.
- To do this, sign in to your Seek And Find account (if you need help with your login information, click on the Forgot username/password? link above the Account Login box).
- From the Edit Your Details screen, select the My Listings tab, and then click on the green Edit button to the right of your listing.
- This takes you to the Edit Entry screen. Under the Basic Info tab, look at the foot of the page for a checkbox under Do Not Show Reviews. If the box is checked, then customers will not be able to view or post any reviews. Uncheck the box, and be sure to accept the terms and conditions before hitting Save; your listing will immediately update and customers will be able to post reviews, as well as a rating of 1–5 gold stars.
A couple of points to keep in mind:
Encourage satisfied customers to review your business; you already know how potential customers rely on reviews, so let your current customers know how valuable their feedback is—for business owners, the sincerest form of appreciation is a referral!
And what about the not-so-great reviews? Take them for what they are—opportunities. A business that takes the time to follow up and resolve an issue for an unhappy customer often wins the trust of the customer; post a follow-up review of your own, and work with the customer—and don’t forget to post again when the issue is resolved, so that everyone can read about the happy ending!

Whatever important or time-sensitive information you need to communicate to your members, you can do it via the e-mail notification—so take FIVE minutes, and get the message out!

If you've ever used a GPS before, you're familiar with the dreaded Voice—one wrong move and you hear the tired sigh, and then... "Recalculating." But let's face it, things change, and with today's technology, they can change at lightning speed; and we just have to do our best to keep up.
Some changes are for the better, though. For example, if you haven't updated the categories your business is listed under in Seek And Find recently, you'll find several additions have been made. Accurately identifying your business categories can help new customers find you—customers who already want to patronize your business, because you help support their communities. So make it easy for them to find you; take FIVE minutes and update your business listing's Categories:
- To get started, log on to Seek And Find by entering your e-mail address and password in the Account Login box, in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
- Click on Edit my profile/listings beneath your name to access the Edit Your Details page.
- Click on Edit to the right of your listing, which will bring you to the Edit Entry page.
- From the tabs across the top of the page, select Category to see a list of categories.
- Get subcategories by clicking on the plus sign next to a category. (For example if you click on the plus sign next to Food & Beverage, nine subcategories will display, one of which is Bakery.)
- If you select a category that includes subcategories, you must select a subcategory. If you try to add the main category, the system will prompt you to pick one of the subcategories.
- Simply click on the category or subcategory you want to list your business under and then click the green arrow pointing toward the small box to the upper right. If you change your mind on a category, click on your choice in the box and then click on the arrows pointing away from the box to remove it.You can select up to three categories to list your business under.
- Once you are done, remember to check the box next to I accept the terms and conditions of SeekAndFind.com at the bottom of the page and then click on the red Save button to save your changes.

You already know the benefits of bulletin and newsetter advertising, particularly around major holidays like Easter, as families across the country come together for annual celebrations and come to services too. Historically, online traffic at Seek And Find experiences a dramatic increase at Easter time as well. This year, for example, we received over 95,000 visitors during the week of Ash Wednesday—with nearly 32,000 of them on the day of Ash Wednesday itself! Many of our publication advertisers like to update their ads around this time of year, knowing the increased readership bulletins and newsletters will see. But don't neglect your online Seek And Find listing! Now is an ideal time to make sure your online storefront is up-to-date as well. So make sure you've dyed all the eggs and put on your Sunday best, so to speak. Do you have any upcoming spring sales or promotions to advertise? You can post a coupon or flyer or product menu right on your listing! Is your contact information up-to-date? Have you entered a description of your business so people know who you are and what you do? Updated your business categories so they can find you in their Seek And Find searches; or your meta data, so the rest of the Web sees you too? Maybe you'd like to welcome new visitors in person—you can even upload a YouTube video to your page! And don't forget about the customers who have taken the time to leave reviews of your business—positive or negative—thank them for their time and answer their questions. You make the effort to ensure your business is welcoming to customers and potential customers who walk in the door; now make sure the online door of your business is open too!
